As summer and fall approaches, it’s time to spruce up our outdoor spaces! Creating an inviting area in which to entertain guests, relax with the family and enjoy the season isn’t as difficult as you may think. You can add ambience to your outdoor area by featuring a few main elements. Focus on things that appeal to the senses. Lighting and textiles can add romance and softness and are crucial to creating ambience. Also consider adding water or fire features for interest and mood. Plant and floral pieces add much needed color and a pleasant smell and flooring can bring warmth to a space and make it feel finished. Don’t forget a privacy screen for added intimacy. This “chandelier” of hanging lanterns is super unique and eye-catching. If you’ve been hoarding lanterns over the years, this is the perfect project for you! You can find amazing lanterns online, like these at West Elm, Pottery Barn, Wayfair, Pier One, World Market, Target, Overstock and Williams Sonoma.
Similarly, this lighting project makes use of mismatched lanterns, ropes, pulleys, and hooks. It pulls double duty in the ambience arena by adding visual interest and providing soft mood lighting.
Add a canopy of lights over your patio by following this simple how-to. Pier One has an array of outdoor string lights to choose from, like these beach-y sea glass lights, industrial style bulbs, and lantern string lights.
If you’re stringing up some lights around a deck or patio, make them pop by adding ping pong balls over each bulb!
You could also cover your string light bulbs with rattan balls from the dollar store. It’s rustic and charming, and couldn’t be easier.
Use extra building materials to create a simple candle holder! It won’t cost you much, if anything, but it will add the mood you want.
If you like the idea of tiki torches, but are looking for something with a little more interest, try these wine bottle torches. You can make them almost entirely from inexpensive hardware store finds, and can attach them to fences, railings or pergola posts.
These mason jar citronella “torches” are also unique and add romance, with the added bonus of warding off pests!
Or, make hanging lanterns with mason jars, tea lights and a bit of chain. Simple, cute and versatile. You can get mason jar lids with the chain attached from Micheals.
Here’s a fun lighting project that incorporates reclaimed wood. Attach mason jars to a fence panel or pallet wood with pipe hangers and add a wick. For a beach-y look, add sand and shells to the jars.
You can create some custom solar powered lights with mason jars and glass marbles or stones from the dollar store. With just a few minutes and even fewer dollars you could have some unique mood lighting all along your path or patio.
And while you’re at it, make a few solar powered lamps for your seating area as well!
You could even DIY a solar powered chandelier for your outdoor space just as easily!
And if you really like solar powered lights, you can find several different DIY ideas here! From lanterns and table lamps to wall lights and street lamp posts – there are lots of charming ideas.
